The Defensoras defend the territory, their indigenous identity, and gender equality.
In Guatemala and Honduras, indigenous Maya, Lenca and Garifuna women are standing up to the influx of transnational firms. And they are doing it with their own agenda, with an integrated vision of the struggle against the different forms of violence they are subjected to. But the price the Defensoras have to pay is high: murder, rape and criminalisation.
In some cases they have won victories, and hydroelectric projects are being seriously challenged or have had to abandon their activity.
As they say, they are fighting for their territory-body. And their weapon is dignity.
